Sarah Berke joined CURE in December 2004 as a Senior Staff Scientist. She was named the Coordinator of Curriculum and Grants Development in 2005, and is now Director of BioBus Educational Programs. Over the past two years Sarah focused on revising the current BioBus curricula, designing new experiments, and broadening the teacher professional development workshops, in addition to teaching on the BioBus and in BioConnection classrooms.

Sarah actively presents at regional and national science education and research conferences including, the Society for Neuroscience, the Connecticut Science Supervisors Association and the National Science Teachers Association. Since moving to Connecticut, she has been actively involved in the New Haven Science Fair Mentor Program and the Connecticut State Science Fair, as well as the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Sarah was recently invited to review science education proposals for the National Science Foundation.

Before coming to CURE, Sarah was involved in science education outreach and teaching.  Among her many activities, she planned neuroscience educational outreach programs at the University of Iowa, including the Iowa Kids Judge! Neuroscience Fairs. She was also a member of the Science and Engineering Development Team at the Iowa Children's Museum.  While pursuing her graduate degree at the University of Iowa, she created and taught a now a required graduate class, Methods in Neuroscience.

Sarah holds a doctoral degree in neuroscience from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.  Her graduate work focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms behind why neurons die, using various neurodegenerative disease models.  She earned a bachelor of arts degree in biology and psychology from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois.
